Brief Job Description

As the Refractory Head - Ladle Preparation at AFL, Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria, you will be responsible for managing the entire refractory process with a special focus on ladle preparation.

Your role is crucial in ensuring that refractory materials meet the required quality standards while maintaining compliance with safety regulations.

You will oversee ladle operations, manage a team, and ensure seamless casting operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect Refractory Materials:
    1. Responsible for inspecting refractory materials in the ladles to ensure they meet the required standards.
    2. Conduct regular checks and assessments of refractory conditions.
  • Prepare Slide Gate Refractories:
    1. Preparing slide gate refractories for operation, ensuring they are ready for use.
    2. Oversee the installation and maintenance of slide gate components.
  • Clean and Maintain Components:
    1. Ensuring the cleaning and maintenance of slide gates and other ladle components.
    2. Implement routine maintenance schedules to prevent operational disruptions.
  • Manage Ladle and Tundish Preheaters:
    1. Managing proper operation and maintenance of ladle and tundish preheaters.
    2. Ensure efficient preheating processes to support seamless casting operations.
  • Ladle Rotation Management:
    1. Managing proper ladle rotation to ensure optimal usage and longevity of refractory materials.
    2. Develop and implement rotation schedules.
  • Seamless Casting Operations:
    1. Ensuring seamless casting operations by coordinating with relevant departments and teams.
    2. Monitor and adjust processes to maintain continuous casting flow.
  • Ladle Furnace Operations and Maintenance:
    1. Manage the operations and maintenance of the ladle furnace, ensuring its efficiency and reliability.
    2. Perform regular inspections and preventive maintenance.
  • Safety Policies and Practices:
    1. Initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
    2. Conduct safety drills and training sessions for team members.
  • Quality Standards Assurance:
    1. Ensure all processes meet the specified quality standards.
    2. Implement quality control measures and conduct regular quality assessments.
  • Team and Shift Management:
    1. Lead and manage the team and shifts for seamless operation.
    2. Provide guidance, training, and support to team members.
  • Accurate Record Keeping:
    1. Maintain accurate records of all refractory processes and maintenance activities.
    2. Ensure documentation is up-to-date and readily accessible.
  • Present MIS to Stakeholders:
    1. Attend and present management information systems (MIS) reports to stakeholders.
    2. Provide detailed updates on refractory processes and operations.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in Refractories in SMS required; 15 years preferred.
  • B.Eng. in Engineering or Metallurgy required; Advanced certifications in refractory materials or metallurgy preferred.
  • Managing Ladle Preparation: Expertise in preparing and maintaining ladles for steel melting operations.
  • Maintaining Quality Standards: Ensuring all refractory processes meet specified quality standards.
  • Maintaining Safety Standards: Strict adherence to safety protocols and standards.
  • Shift Coordination: Efficient management of shifts to ensure continuous operation.
  • Metallurgy and Steel Chemistry: Strong understanding of metallurgical principles and steel chemistry.
